Does Jan Perry Have A Westside Problem?

Categories: community, election, politics

At a Westside fundraiser for the reelection of California Secretary of State Debra Bowen Sunday, several people walked away as Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry held court to introduce Bowen, a source who was at the event tells LA Weekly.

Most of those people quietly returned as Bowen took the metaphorical spotlight at a private residence -- a sign of some dissatisfaction with the downtown councilwoman even among her local party compatriots. Perry is widely believed to be headed for a run for mayor of Los Angeles. But some on the Westside, our source says, see her as too cozy with developers. "She has been in the past very dismissive of Westside interests," our source said.

The incident at the event co-sponsored by the West L.A. Democratic Club could forecast an uphill battle for Perry if she's serious about becoming mayor. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's bedrock constituency was the liberal, eco-conscious and heavily Jewish vote of the Westside.

Perry has long been cozy with mega-developer Anschutz Entertainment Group: She defended having the city spend $3.2 million in policing for its Michael Jackson memorial show at Staples Center last year. And, our source notes, she has been accused of advocating for billboards along the Santa Monica Freeway at a time when many residents were disgusted with billboard plight in the city.

The perception of Perry among some Westside Democrats is that "she's carrying water for the big dogs," our source said. She's nothing but a greedy whore for the big downtown development pimps.
